Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
