British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
