An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about secret information in all cars.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official operations, including transport usage to communication habits.
