Colombia's President Warns 'I Will Return to Arms Once More' should US Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone of their exchange, heightening strains bilaterally following US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates drug factories and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Rising Threats coupled with Claims

Addressing the press on Sunday, the US president threatened similar military action against Bogotá, asserting Colombia is also "very ill" and “run by an unwell individual who enjoys creating cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the leading producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, the nation's current leader, is directly tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

This nation has long been a close partner of Washington in the struggle against drug trafficking and received wide political approval from American politicians, but relations have soured markedly following Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms after a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if military intervention similar to Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed decades ago, firmly denied these allegations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he stated.

"Trump speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. If they capture me, whom many of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in creating a new constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming an influential politician. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume arms again," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s personal security had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, but voices from all sides of the political spectrum have condemned the notion of a US attack against their nation.

Political and Economic Pressure

Washington revoked his travel authorization following he encouraged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. Later, in October, authorities imposed asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and several close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the region and bombing suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed attacks against vessels in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
