Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
